We all know the wet, unusable corner of the garden that we never like to visit.

It was a waste of space. But Chris transformed it into a home office, achieving his dream of working from home without getting in the way of his partner.

“The journey to buy a Melwood was actually very good…The process could not have been easier.”

Work-life separation

Chris’ partner, is a school teacher, so she spends many hours at home during his usual 9-5 work schedule. Although they love each other’s company, when it comes to work, separate dedicated spaces for Zoom meetings and school tutoring is a must.

After a bit of research, Chris discovered the Melwood range of garden rooms. It was the quick and easy way to turn that dead space in the back garden into a thriving home office.

“I can now separate work from home life. When I shut down the computer at 5 o’clock and walk up to the house, I feel relaxed and ready for the next part of the day,” Chris tells us.

Daytime structure

The space is filled with natural light. And to maximise this, Chris has set up his desk in front of the two large windows which overlook the sprawling garden. The other end is set up for his partner, Stella, to conduct her after-hours tutoring.

The addition of a double sofa bed and TV provides the perfect divider between the two working areas. And doubles as overflow accommodation when guests come to stay.

“It has brought structure to my days. During school holidays I am now completely out of the way,” he explains.

Chris has installed a light in the window that automatically shows when his computer is in a meeting, so everyone knows when they can disturb him.

Dead space to home office

Reminiscing, Chris looks back on his journey with Greenspan. He searched many places to try and find a good, solid solution for his home office. Ultimately, he kept coming back to his Design Solutioneer at Greenspan.

“There was never any pressure, just helpful advice. I kept ending up back with him and realised that the big selection and good prices meant that I should probably use Greenspan.”

What was a wasted space in the garden, overrun with weeds, is now a lovely home office.

It has certainly increased the value of the property!

Chris chose the Melwood Mod design No. 15, measuring 5.4m x 2.6m with large windows to the front and side, maximising his view of the garden. He personalised his design with sustainable hardwood cladding and colonial style 10 lite timber doors, creating a Hamptons-inspired design aesthetic.

A peaceful place for clients and guests.

Amanda’s Melwood cabana home office exudes a calm ambience, with natural timber colours contrasted by textural accents. Boasting a coastal view, what more could you want from a backyard retreat?

“I love working from home. If I didn’t have the cabana, it would be very difficult to have clients here. It’s invaluable.”

A peaceful meeting space

“It’s like a time-out room. When I’m in here, I feel like I’ve gone to work because I’ll be up here for hours. Then, I re-enter the house like I’ve driven to work,” Amanda tells us.

As a counsellor, Amanda needed a dedicated private space away from the main house. It was important that this space provided a peaceful environment for meeting her clients.

“It’s been very beneficial for us…It’s lovely to have a separate space for the clients I have,” she says. “Working in a peaceful environment and doing counselling sessions makes a huge difference to how vulnerable people want to be.“

Impressive design flexibility

The multipurpose Melwood has enabled Amanda and her family to make use of the dead space at the top of their steep yard, and it has also become the main entertaining area in summer.

Amanda chose the Melwood Mod Design No. 20, with additional glass doors across the front to maximise the coastal view. She personalised her design with wrap-around decking, Board and Batten cladding, and custom highlights; an aesthetically pleasing way to maximise the natural light inside her studio.

“I was impressed by the flexibility of the design,” Amanda recalls.

Calming aesthetics

Painting the cladding white to mirror her aluminium windows and “Surfmist” Colorbond® roofing, Amanda has accentuated the coastal feel by enhancing the natural timber tones of her doors and pine decking, providing a calming design atmosphere, essential for her clients.

“It’s high-level anxiety when they arrive. But, by the time they walk up to the cabana, everyone immediately says, ‘I feel so much more relaxed,” she explains.

Not just a home office

With the addition of a beautiful decking area to the side, Amanda’s Melwood has become more than just a home office. It’s the perfect space to have a few drinks with friends whilst enjoying the breathtaking views and ocean breeze.

“In summer, I have the whole cabana open if we are having drinks or entertaining, and even when I work,” Amanda tells us. “It’s so peaceful. That’s a comment I get a lot.”

When Julie’s father, Jim, passed away in 2018, she wanted to create a place where she could feel close to him.

A Melwood was a natural choice.

“Sometimes I feel like he is here with me, and it’s a happy feeling because it’s a peaceful place to honour his memory.”

Right as rain 20 years on

When Julie purchased her property, little did she realise the history that came with it; a Melwood, still going strong and right as rain, 20 years on. But there were two problems.

The existing shed on her property sat just above the water’s edge at the bottom of her garden. “When I had a good look cleaning up the old one, I saw a little plaque that said Melwood on it,” Julie explains. It had been installed in the 90s and used to hold kayaks and swimming gear. But it was just a little too small.

The second problem was a relatively easy obstacle…the colour. A fresh coat of paint would have fixed that in a jiffy, but it would still be too small.

“It was still in perfect condition. It was just that we wanted something a bit bigger and in a different colour,” sums up Julie.

A tribute

Julie wanted a space that was a tribute to her late father in the place that he loved. Somewhere she could also enjoy a few drinks with friends, and reminisce about enjoying a glass of wine with her dad.

“Dad used to love to come down here, have a drink, and watch the kids in the water,” she remembers wistfully.

Impossible access? Think again!

However, albeit beautiful, Julie’s backyard was not level or flat, or even slightly sloped. Curved stone steps grace the side of the cliff edge yard that leads to the clearing just above the water’s edge. A welcome view at the bottom, but a builder’s nightmare.

Just think of the step count after carrying down just the framing timber, let alone the cladding, insulation, roofing, windows, and fastenings. ‘Leg Day’ just got a whole new meaning!

Think again. Melwood, a PreCrafted space solution, installed and weatherproof in a day – you might say how?

Julie was blown away by how quickly her new Melwood would be up and ready to use. “The house took 18 months to renovate. I couldn’t imagine that this went up in one day,” she recalls.

Julie now had a space where she could still store her kayaks, but also enjoy the thunderstorms from the comfort of her verandah. A place where she could work away on her handmade art in peace, away from the house and the kids…a long steep way away!

Cheers to the good times

“We purchased it with the money from Dad’s will…He loved it here in this spot, so we called it ‘The Jim’,” Julie tells us.

What a tribute to the many good times previously. A space where Julie can feel connected with her father, away from the day-to-day distractions of life. Recalling the past, “Dad would be so proud, he would love it here. We spend time doing what he loved best which was having a glass of wine,” Julie says.

‘The Jim’, now a household name in the neighbourhood, has become a frequented place for after-cruise drinks. And what a great way to honour her father’s favourite spot and activity.

Julie tells us, “My friends say ‘we’re going to ‘The Jim’ for drinks.’ When we’re out on the boats, we’ll move on to ‘The Jim’ as an after-party.”

And now, as Julie’s mates congregate around the cabana, drinks are on, and it’s cheers to you, Jim!

Coastal vibes for a waterfront location

Julie chose the Melwood Verandah Design No. 12, measuring 3.6m x 3.2m, featuring cedar weatherboard cladding, and personalised windows/doors.

She also added an internal partition wall and side door, creating a separate space for storage of the kayaks and lifejackets. She also added a window in this separate space for ventilation, given the soggy atmosphere that accompanies wet storage.

The mother-of-two has made the cabana look like a natural extension of the house. With a pale grey exterior cladding contrasted by white accents of doors and windows, Julie has achieved an ultimate Hamptons coastal vibe throughout.

The journey to honour Jim

“I have loved the verandah; even when it’s pouring rain, I can sit in here, and it’s a protector. It never gets wet in here, and it’s beautiful to sit here in a thunderstorm with the doors open…It was the best decision I made because I nearly didn’t have the verandah, but I’m so glad I did.”

Julie affectionately recalls her Melwood journey;

“It was just after the passing of my dad. It was a sensitive time, and I wanted it to be perfect…It was such a good experience…They were so friendly to work with, and I wanted options to have the view to wrap right around.”

What a great honour to be involved in this special project with Julie – a tribute to her late father Jim.

Adam and Jacqueline faced the challenge of working from home whilst sharing the same space with their teenage boys who wanted to watch TV and play games.

A familiar experience that many parents shared over the course of the COVID lockdowns,
but one that was overcome with a Melwood.

“We knew we wanted a backyard room and we liked the look
of the eSpace.
Greenspan also seemed to make the process really easy.”

The drawcard

Adam was drawn to Melwood after being recommended by a friend. He needed a separate space for the boys to enjoy their afternoons without having to keep the noise down or worry about disturbing their parents’ work schedules.

“We both work from home and so often the kids were coming home from school and wanting to watch TV or play games in the house and it would be disruptive to our work day,“ Adam explains.

Home improvements

Adding a Melwood to Adam and Jacqueline’s backyard has enhanced their family lifestyle. The kids now have their own space to relax, whilst still in the safety of their own backyard, and Adam and Jacqueline can enjoy working from home in the now peaceful atmosphere!

“Now they hang out in the back room and do that and we can’t even hear them. It’s great, it has made our afternoons much more serene and peaceful.“

Getting there

Adam found his journey with Melwood to be a really easy and quick way to add the space he needed to his backyard.

“It was great that we could drive 10 mins down the road and have a look at an example of one and speak to a real person,” he recalls.

“The process was great. Working with Franky was really good. He came out to our house, had a look at the backyard and was able to talk through some possibilities. He showed us a model right there on the iPad which was great too.“

Adam chose the eSpace 1900, measuring 5.4m x 3.8m with premium vertical Cedar on the front two facades, and our sustainable eco-hardwood on the rear facades.

Adam also personalised his Melwood with “Black” aluminium windows/doors and Colorbond® roofing in “Nightsky”.

All measurements are approximate.

A poolside structure, designed to blend in with the existing house, we love Brooke’s Melwood Mod 20. Brooke purchased her Melwood a few months ago, and couldn’t be happier with her new personalised space.

Absolutely incredible thank you…I couldn’t be happier with the whole process and outcome

Brooke

Brooke personalised her Melwood by adding large glass sidelights & doors across the front, mirroring the rear façade of her home.

Opening on to the manicured lawn behind the pool, this Melwood has given Brooke and her family the extra space they need to enjoy their beautiful backyard.

Currently being used for storage, Brooke is hoping to finish the interiors over the coming months and create the ideal pool room retreat which doubles as a home office.

“I went with Melwood because of the flexibility to move the door & window configuration around our tree, the architectural shape so that I could get the north light in through the top front high windows

Brooke

Painted the same colour as her house, Brooke’s Melwood blends seamlessly into her backyard setting.

Brook chose the Melwood Mod Design 20, measuring 6.3m x 3.2m, featuring sustainable pre-primed weatherboard cladding, “White” aluminium windows & Colorbond™️ roofing in “Surfmist”.

Anna and Andy first purchased their Melwoods to help kick-start their dream of owning and operating a truffle farm. Used initially for storing mowers & farm equipment, it also became the home to many of their baby trees prior to planting.

“I said to Andy, ‘wouldn’t it be nice if one day we went overseas and I could work with an old truffle hunter in Italy?’”

“Andy said, ‘why don’t we start our own instead?’”

It was a love of truffles that set Anna and Andy on a new path to achieve their tree-change lifestyle of owning their very own truffle farm.

From there, a vision turned into a reality, and two months later they found a piece of land and embarked on bringing their dream to life!

Anna and Andy chose the Melwood Porch Design No. 12, measuring 3.2m x 4.9m set in the open pastures of their truffle farm, making the most of the view of the rolling hills around them.

We got the first Melwood because we liked the idea that it was quick and easy to put up. We wanted it to store our mowers and farm equipment.”

A couple of years later, they added their second Melwood, a Mod design No. 23, measuring 7.2m x 3.2m with a large deck across the front to enjoy the cliff edge view. Both buildings feature Cedar cladding, handcrafted double hung Cedar windows & Colorbond™️ Roofing in “Woodland Grey”.

It’s lovely…It’s been a massive tree change.”

“We chose this great spot that looked out onto the river. It sits perched on the edge of our cliff.“

Situated in the scenic Southern Highlands, Anna and Andy have added a slow-combustion wood fire and stove, creating the ultimate cosy off-grid retreat for the winter months.

Rob purchased his Melwood for his business a few years ago, and proved just how quickly it enhanced his business operations. Used as a site office for a land development and subdivision in the Mountains, the addition of his eSpace 2300, was a quick and effective way to add the space he needed for working remotely onsite & meeting clients.

Situated at the entry to a new subdivision in the Mountains, Rob’s Melwood sits proudly at the top of the hill, overlooking the new blocks below. With a backdrop of Australian gum trees, and rolling green hills, this space, exudes a very calm atmosphere, the perfect workspace.

Rob chose the Melwood eSpace 2300, measuring 9.0m x 3.2m, featuring sustainable eco-hardwood cladding, Colorbond™️ roofing in “Nightsky” and “Black” aluminium windows & doors.

The interiors mirror the Scandi design palette of the exterior, with plywood lining the walls & ceiling, complimented by the natural timber accent furniture throughout.

With the exterior painted to match the “Nightsky” Colorbond™️ roofing, Rob has achieved the increasingly popular “black on black” Scandi design aesthetic with his Melwood.
