Kerry-Anne and Stuart purchased their property in July 2017 for $1,103,000 and shortly after had their Melwood installed in their backyard in February 2018.

The Melwood being the main change made to the property since they purchased the property in 2017, Kerry-Anne and Stuart went on to sell their property in November 2021, for over $1million dollars more in just over four years.

Kerry-Anne purchased a hybrid design, starting off with a Porch Design No. 20 Measuring 6.3m x 3.2m (plus 1.3m x 3.2m porch/decking) & then adding a verandah along the length, picking up an additional 1.3m x 7.6m of covered decking. They chose Colorbond™️ roofing in “Surfmist”, ‘White’ aluminium windows and upgraded two sides (those facing the garden/house) to Cedar weatherboard.

Not leaving much to desire on the interior, Kerry-Anne and Stuart created a gorgeous contemporary lux feel with inviting textures, tasteful finishes, and a bathroom to die for!

In a quiet leafy suburb of northern Sydney, Dasantha and his family are enjoying their Melwood garden room – a home gym and multipurpose backyard space.

Their Melwood Mod 18 measuring 5.4×3.2m features board and batten cladding painted in dark grey, a Colorbond® roof in “Monument” and black window architraves, offering a clean and contemporary addition to the backyard.

“We love the cabana, it’s amazing.”

Here at Greenspan, we’re always amazed at our customers’ creativity, especially when it comes to contemporary pool house designs. For Denis on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, even the family fur baby enjoys the backyard cabana.

A pool house, home gym, outdoor living room and general space for the whole family – Denis is thrilled with his Melwood Cabana. Pepper, the pet Cavoodle, seems impressed too.

“We really love our poolside Mod, which we have had for over a year now.”

Denis purchased a Melwood Mod Design 21, measuring 5mx3.7m featuring a Colorbond® roof in “Surfmist”and pre-primed weatherboard exterior cladding, which he painted white. With lush tropical landscapes as its backdrop and a sparkling inground swimming pool adjacent, Denis’ oasis has to be one of our favourite pool house designs.

“We like its elegance and it fits right into our backyard beside the pool without dominating the garden. We managed to match the look with our house seamlessly.”

Fitted out internally with gyprock walls, laminate floor boards, lighting and even an A/C unit for all-year comfort, the backyard cabana gets plenty of use by the whole family.

“While it works well as a general pool cabana, we have installed a large screen so it works well for the kids’ gaming activity or dad’s footy watching, away from the main house.”

Customisable, made to match and durable in all kinds of weather, the widely popular Melwood Mod Design timber shed proves to be a winner when it comes to adding backyard space on narrow lots.

At least, according to Christine from Sydney’s inner west in NSW.

“Our Melwood cabana has changed our life! We live in a small house and simply couldn’t do without it!”

Christine is more than impressed with her Melwood timber shed, which she tells us she has used for multiple purposes such as a guest room, study, outdoor room, and general space to read, listen to music, and relax.

More Aussie families are turning to alternative solutions to add space to their homes. This is due to the daunting process of council applications and approvals to extend or renovate. But for Christine, she sought a better way to meet her needs.

“I did a lot of research before deciding on a Melwood. After virtual conversations with Franky and a visit to the Drummoyne showroom, we knew the Mod 18 would work for us. It could be customised to the size we needed for the space we had, it could be constructed as an exempt development and the workmanship and quality of materials was first class.”

Another pain point for customers is finding a suitable solution to fit their yard dimensions without breaking the bank. With blocks varying in size and width, getting a custom builder and designer to construct a wooden shed could end up being an expensive exercise.

Thankfully, it was an entirely different story for Christine. On the contrary, her Melwood was modified to perfectly suit her yard without the need for an architectural designer or builder.

“The design process was very supportive. We were coordinating the cabana design with a larger landscaping design and did quite a bit of to and from between our landscape designer and the Melwood designers. Nothing was a problem and we had confidence that the cabana would fit in well in our overall landscaping design. The design process was easy and the team was just so helpful! The price was also very competitive compared to other similar products.”

Constructed in PreCrafted panels out of the factory, Christine’s beloved wooden shed was easily transported and assembled in a short amount of time without the need for a crane or heavy plant equipment.

When it comes to purchasing a Melwood timber shed, Christine also knows the long-term benefits.

Robert and Jane’s Melwood coastal cabins at Mackerel Beach

Two Melwood timber cabins were transported by boat to Mackerel Beach in Sydney’s Northern Beaches where they were built to last for generations to come.

Two Melwood cabins were transported by boat to Mackerel Beach in Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Transported by barge from Palm Beach Wharf to a secluded sub-tropical rainforest on Great Mackerel Beach, two Melwood garden rooms set sail. Did they make it safely to shore?

On the western side of Pittwater about 43 kilometres north of the Sydney CBD are two Melwood timber sheds that stand proudly upon rocky hills with tropical bushland as its backdrop.

Robert and Jane purchased two Melwood Verandahs for their peaceful property on Great Mackerel Beach, which lies between the vast sea of the eastern coast and the tip of Kuring-gai National Park.

Great Mackerel Beach is as tranquil as it is pristine, occupied by some 30 residents in total. Located within a remote part of the Northern Beaches, Mackerel Beach has no road access.

Robert & Jane’s timber sheds | Melwood Cabanas — The sand on the beach is the result of sandstone flowing down the Hawkesbury River and is soft and golden.

However, as demonstrated here, there are few limitations when it comes to adding extra space for the experts at Greenspan. Despite Mackerel Beach being only accessible by boat, not one but two Melwood wooden garden sheds were transported and installed successfully.

Due to its panel kit design, Melwood cedar sheds can be transported in sections. This is a handy and cost-effective alternative for those who can’t afford or access a crane to lift an entire garden room structure onto their property. With Melwood cabanas engineered to be demountable, getting a wooden cabin on and offsite could be done in as little as one day.

En route from Palm Beach Wharf to Great Mackerel Beach

Professional Melwood installers set sail on calm and crystal-clear waters from Palm Beach Wharf, fully equipped with the kit cabins, an SUV, a trailer and tools. And no boat can be without its trusty captain and crew, who also undertook loading and unloading from ship to shore, with the help of a trusty hydraulic arm at the dock.

The installers then travelled to a flattened site carved out of a 45-degree mountain slope and quickly got to work with assembly. Firstly, concrete piers, footing pads, and elevated decking were installed, followed by the addition of a grid floor system and wall panels, consisting of external board and batten cladding. Roof framing and trussing were next with the Colorbond® roof, gutters, and downpipes in “Surfmist” the final step.

Robert and Jane were presented with two impressive backyard cabins joined by open decking, with one of the structures featuring a fully covered verandah facing north-east to catch those seaside sunrises.

Extra windows and doors, internal partitioning and professional pre-painting of the exterior were included in the overall design, as per Robert and Jane’s request, resulting in a peaceful beachside place to unwind.

Later on, internal linings and solar panels were added. Furniture and an outdoor BBQ transformed the wood shed kits into warm and inviting spaces for the family to relax.

Jane says, “We had those cabins until a couple of weeks ago when we sold the property. We got them seven years ago and it’s still in really good condition, they still look good.”

The property was first purchased in 1987 for $52,500 and sold decades later in 2022 for $865,000. And far removed from the original Mackerel Beach fibro shacks built as fishermen’s cottages since 1920, the waterfront weekender is destined to last for generations to come.

While no longer owners of the timber sheds, Jane still remembers them as a fun place to visit.

“Thank you very much for those, they were very useful and we’d recommend you again.”

This pool house garden room is a perfect example of how easily a Melwood can be transported to and built onsite, adding much-needed space to a small suburban property in a matter of mere hours.

Glenn’s Melwood Porch 20 sits adjacent their backyard pool, connected seamlessly by decking to an alfresco dining area, courtyard and a meticulously maintained lawn. At a glance, the cabana looks as though it’s part of the original house. However, upon closer inspection, you’ll see it’s joined to the garage via a portico, forming part of the Melwood design.

For hot summer days, Glenn and his family enjoy a pool cabana only steps away while in the off season months, the garden room can serve as a work-from-home office and teen retreat.

“It has completely changed our household environment. We as a family couldn’t imagine not having it.”

Measuring 6.3mx3.2m featuring pre-primed weatherboard cladding combined with board and batten cladding, Glenn’s pool house has a Colorbond® roof in “Monument” with white door and window architraves to perfectly match the family home.

Internally fitted out with laminate timber floorboards and white panel roof linings, Glenn is thrilled. With the addition of a comfy couch, office desk, TV, and soft furnishings, the space has plenty to offer the whole family. Even an A/C unit has been added for ultimate comfort.

“We love our cabana. It has been such a great space, from working at home to kids sleepovers. We would recommend this option to anyone. Just brilliant.”

Thanks to its prefabricated design, Melwood structures are ‘modular’ in that panels can be added to suit the space, while window and door configuration is customisable. For Glenn, the roof was also modified to create an extension over the garage, making flexibility one of the biggest requirements for his backyard project.

To make the space his own, additional upgrades such as an internal wall partition, extra decking to wrap around the structure, and extra windows were included.

How Jessica added space and phenomenal value to her property

Barry’s tropical garden oasis with Polynesian vibes

A tree change is a pipe dream for many city-dwellers and likewise, downsizing from acreage to start a new life in the suburbs is becoming common for some.

When it was time to relocate from a five acre property in the country to a growing town in northern NSW, Barry purchased his home and installed a Melwood for that extra bit of special space.

Barry says, “We love it. It’s great!”

“Neat and well constructed, our Melwood has not only extended our living space but provided a highly functional private self-contained studio space.”

Used as an art studio for painting, clay sculpture and enjoying some R&R, Barry loves having a relaxing space to go to.

“We got it primarily for an escape place to go up to because the block is kind of elevated at the back and you can look over the house. It just gives a lovely outlook and opens out the perspective.”

Barry also added his own finishes touches to keep down the glare. By adding reflective film to the horizontal windows, it’s helped keep the art studio cool from the morning sun.

Previously maintaining an English country garden on his acreage, Barry enjoyed the process of decorating his Melwood and DIY-ing the landscape design.

“It has also made a very attractive focal point for our garden, not to mention the added value to the property.”
